Torrey Pines Joins the PGA TOUR Championship Series in 2028
It’s official: Torrey Pines is headed to the top tier of professional golf. Sentry Insurance, the PGA TOUR, and the Century Club of San Diego have announced that The Sentry — the annual PGA TOUR event played at Torrey Pines Golf Course — will become part of the new PGA TOUR Championship Series beginning in 2028.
First announced in June, the Championship Series brings the TOUR’s top performers together across the season. It will feature roughly 23–24 events — including THE PLAYERS Championship, the major championships, the FedExCup postseason, and the international team events, the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup — with the season running from February through August. It is, in short, the highest level of the professional game, and San Diego now has a seat at that table.
A Stage That Earned It
Championship golf is no stranger to this stretch of coastline. A PGA TOUR event has been played in San Diego for 75 years, dating back to the 1952 San Diego Open, and Torrey Pines has hosted it every year since 1968. The South Course welcomed the U.S. Open in 2008 and again in 2021, and this past January Justin Rose delivered a performance for the books — a record 23-under total, a seven-shot victory, and the tournament’s first wire-to-wire winner since Tommy Bolt in 1955. The 2027 event will mark the 60th time the tournament has been contested at Torrey Pines.

What Comes Next
Before the Championship Series era begins, The Sentry debuts under its new name at Torrey Pines from January 27–30, 2027. The Wednesday-through-Saturday schedule gives the TOUR its only scheduled Saturday finish and headlines the PGA TOUR’s network debut on CBS, with coverage also on CBS/Paramount+, Golf Channel, and PGA TOUR Studios.
The complete 2028 Championship Series schedule — dates, venues, and event names — will be announced later. With the season running February through August, Torrey’s traditional January week is expected to shift; exactly where it lands is news well worth waiting for.
