Torrey Pines SOUTH Golf Course Hosts

2008 U.S. OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

San Diego golfers, along with the San Diego golf and hospitality industry get their "Big Break" with the selection of the Torrey Pines South Course to host the United States Golf Association (USGA) 2008 U.S. OPEN Golf Championship beginning June 12, 2008. Torrey Pines is only the second municipal golf course ever selected to host this prestigious golf event. The Black Course at Bethpage, N.Y. was the first in 2002.

San Diego is expected to roll-out the red carpet to accommodate the 40,000 or more fans that are expected to attend each day. Although San Diego has Super Bowl hosting experience, event organizers and city officials predict the U.S. OPEN at Torrey Pines will out perform past Super Bowls as the most economically profitable sporting event ever hosted by the City of San Diego. This high profile golf event will bring millions of dollars to the local economy.

An event of this stature is also sure to dramatically increase the "must play" demand to play Torrey Pines Golf Course while visiting golfers are in San Diego on a vacation or business. With the selection of another municipal golf course to host the U.S. OPEN, the USGA has made a statement in selecting a quality public golf course and extended an invitation to public golfers throughout the world to watch the world's best golfers play a golf course they too can play both before and after the U.S. OPEN Championship.

This is sure to challenge the already difficult task San Diego City Officials have had for many years in trying to fairly balance the "politically charged" resident vs. visiting golfer access / tourist dollars controversy at Torrey Pines Golf Course.

While many San Diego resident golfers mistakenly interpret municipal to mean, "for resident use ONLY," the USGA certainly selected Torrey Pines Golf Course based partly on the criteria that "San Diego's Golf Jewel" is a public golf course open for access and play to "public golfers throughout the world."

Jay Rains, chairman of the local organizing committee stated, "We look forward to welcoming the world in 2008 and supporting the USGA in hosting our national championship. We thank the USGA for its bold leadership in support of public access golf."

USGA Press Release Summary
The United States Golf Association has announced the championship is scheduled from June 12 - 15 2008 at Torrey Pines South Course in La Jolla, CA.

Torrey Pines Golf Course is located on the Torrey Pines Mesa in the area of San Diego known as La Jolla, CA which is on the coastal bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Since 1952 PGA Tour players have been playing the Buick OPEN / Buick Invitational on the two Championship 18-hole golf courses, Torrey Pines NORTH and Torrey Pines SOUTH each year in January or February. Both courses offer a dramatic picturesque setting and breathtaking ocean views from many holes.

Phil Mickelson won the Buick Invitational in 2000 and 2001, Jose Maria Olazabal in 2002, Tiger Woods in 2003 and John Daly in 2004. Since then Tiger Woods has won the Buick Invitational for the past three years - 2005, 2006 and 2007. Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson have all been Buick Invitational winners at Torrey Pines Golf Course but none has dominated Torrey Pines like Tiger Woods.

Torrey Pines was designed in 1957 by William Bell Sr. and is only the second golf course owned by the general public to host a U.S. OPEN Championship. In February 2002, architect Rees Jones completed a $ 3.5 million renovation that included adding and redefining the bunkers and tee boxes and moving several greens to increase the length and difficulty of the course.

This will be the tenth U.S. OPEN to be played in California. Prior to Pebble Beach Golf Links hosting the U.S. OPEN in 2000, it was last played at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades in 1948.

The U.S. OPEN Championship was first played in 1895 and is one of 13 national championships conducted by the USGA.
