Two Opens That Made History at Torrey Pines
San Diego doesn’t have to imagine what a U.S. Open here looks like — we’ve hosted two of the most memorable in recent history. In 2008, Tiger Woods won on a broken leg, outlasting Rocco Mediate in a 19-hole Monday playoff for one of the most dramatic finishes the championship has ever seen. Then in 2021, Jon Rahm birdied each of his final two holes on the South Course to capture his first major title by a single stroke. Two Opens, two unforgettable Sundays — proof that Torrey Pines delivers championship drama.
Building the Case: A New Range and Clubhouse
Torrey Pines is exploring a new driving range and a new clubhouse — upgrades that would strengthen the property for years to come. Modern practice grounds and championship-caliber hospitality space are exactly the kind of infrastructure the USGA weighs when awarding future Opens, and the absence of those facilities today may be one reason Torrey isn’t yet on the future schedule. If these projects move forward, they could go a long way toward bringing the U.S. Open back to La Jolla.
The Dates Still Up for Grabs
Most years through 2051 are already spoken for — but not all of them. The 2040 and 2043 U.S. Opens have not been assigned to a venue yet. That’s daylight, and it’s exactly the kind of opening a proven host like Torrey Pines could aim for.
